Privacy Policy
Last updated: 10 September 2026
This policy describes how Inkstone, a Markdown editor for macOS (the "App"), and its website (the "Site") handle information. The App and the Site are published by RecurseChat LLC ("we", "us"). Questions about this policy may be sent to [email protected].
Summary
- The App does not upload your documents.
- The App does not collect analytics, usage data or crash reports.
- The App connects to the internet for two purposes only: to check for updates, and to validate a licence key if you enter one. Update checks can be disabled in Settings.
- Content that your documents reference at a web address, such as an image, is requested from the host you reference.
Documents
The App reads and writes Markdown files in the folders you add to a space, in place. It does not copy, index or transmit them. Any synchronisation of your files between machines is performed by services you choose, such as iCloud Drive, Dropbox or git, under their own terms.
Information stored on your Mac
The App stores the following on your Mac and does not transmit it:
- Settings and preferences.
- References to the folders and files you have opened, and the layout of windows and spaces.
- Version history of documents you edit. Versions are kept in the macOS version store and are removed when they expire under the schedule set in Settings, or when you choose File › Revert To › Delete Version History.
- The date of first launch, used to measure the trial period.
- If you activate a licence: the licence key, an activation identifier and the email address associated with the purchase.
- A log of unexpected internal errors at
~/Library/Logs/Inkstone/, kept for troubleshooting. We receive this log only if you send it to us.
Update checks
The App uses the Sparkle framework to check for new versions by requesting a file from releases.inkstone.md. As with any web request, the server receives your IP address together with the App version and macOS version in the request headers. No system profile is transmitted. Automatic checks may be disabled in Settings. Downloads are served from the same host through Cloudflare, which processes the IP address of each request under the Cloudflare privacy policy.
Licences and payment
Purchases are processed by Lemon Squeezy as merchant of record. Payment details are provided to Lemon Squeezy, not to us, and are governed by the Lemon Squeezy privacy policy.
When you enter a licence key, the App sends the key and your Mac's hardware platform identifier, a UUID assigned by macOS, to api.lemonsqueezy.com in order to activate the licence and enforce its activation limit. The same two values are sent at each periodic validation. Lemon Squeezy returns the licence status and the purchaser's name and email address, which the App stores locally. Deactivating the licence in Settings releases the activation and its identifier. The App does not contact Lemon Squeezy unless a licence key has been entered.
Content referenced by your documents
When a document references an image, video or other resource at a web address, the App requests that resource from its host in order to display it. The host receives an ordinary web request, including your IP address. Links you follow open in your default browser. Spell checking is performed by macOS.
What we do not do
- We do not collect analytics, telemetry or usage data.
- We do not collect crash reports. Crash reporting is governed by macOS and your settings for sharing analytics with Apple.
- We do not include third-party advertising, attribution or experimentation SDKs.
- We do not sell personal information. The only third parties that receive information are those named in this policy, for the purposes stated.
Third parties and international transfers
Lemon Squeezy and Cloudflare are established in the United States and process the information described above under their own policies. If you use the App from outside the United States, that information is transferred there for those purposes.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct or delete personal information we hold about you, and to object to or restrict its processing. Because the App keeps its information on your Mac, most of it is under your direct control. For information we hold, such as correspondence, contact [email protected]; we respond within the period required by applicable law.
Website
The Site consists of static pages served through Cloudflare Pages, which processes the IP address of each request under the Cloudflare privacy policy. The Site sets no cookies and runs no analytics. Correspondence you send us is retained until you ask us to delete it or for three years, whichever is sooner.
Children
The App and the Site are not directed at children under 13, or the higher age required by local law, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
Changes
We may revise this policy. The date at the top records the current version, and material changes are noted in the release notes of the App version that introduces them.
